A few years ago, I did a review of Wood Ranch in Mission Valley. Recently, the more casual outpost, WR Kitchen, opened in Carlsbad. WR Kitchen is a more casual, abbreviated version of Wood Ranch, but with all the great barbecue and other foods that made Wood Ranch successful.
WR Kitchen just added full table service, but the dining room has a well lit, easygoing ambiance. Everything is brought out quickly, so WR is a perfect option for busy families in the area. The night we were invited, loads of families were going to or coming from sports practices and games, as evidenced by the many families with uniformed children.
To start, a pan of their famous garlic parmesan rolls were served. I try to stay as far away from bread as I can these days, but I did have a small nibble, and they were very tasty, and perfect for sopping up sauce bits.
I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of foods served, such as salads, tacos, and sandwiches. I did not get to try the tacos, but I will certainly be back to sample the tacos!
WR Kitchen may be a meat-focused restaurant, but the Natalie's salad was one of the best I've eaten. A sweet balsamic dressing over greens, avocado, Persian cucumbers, and candied pecans. Diners can add a protein for extra, but I did not find it necessary.
As mentioned earlier, WR Kitchen is family friendly, with a full children's menu of kid favorites, as well as mini-sized items from the adult menu. The chicken fingers and fries are great treat food for little ones.
The star of any meal at the WR restaurants is the grilled meat. The trio platter is highly recommended, because you get to sample three of the delicious barbecued meats, along with a side. This plate included the tri-tip, ribs, and pulled pork, but there are other options, including chicken. The barbecue was flavorful, tender, and just perfect.
For the side, we chose the loaded mashed potatoes, which were served in a skillet, and piled with cheese, real bacon, and cheese. So good, and a nice large helping.
I love beef brisket, so I went with the platter, and had delicious sweet potato fries as the side. The brisket was very tender, but definitely needed the sauce for more flavor and zip. The fries were amazing, and plentiful.
WR Kitchen is open in Carlsbad daily for lunch and dinner. Check out their amazing barbecue at this cute location.
