After the success of their Pacific Beach and Liberty Station locations, Fig Tree Cafe has opened a third location in the lively Gaslamp District. The third location brings all of the charm and gourmet favorites from the other locations and makes them part of the beautiful downtown area. We were invited to check it out for a breakfast, and were pretty thrilled with the new location.
Of course, no brunch is complete without some sort of cocktail, and to that end, Fig Tree has a full bar as well as signature drinks on their menu, including several varieties of Bloody Marys and Mimosas.
Expect lines to form in anticipation of the delicious French toast offerings. Wanting a taste of each one, we went for the sampler platter, which was a great decision! The berries and cream, stuffed French toast, and sautéed apple flavors were our choices, but any of the flavors are going to be amazing.
The stuffed French toast was folded with sweet mascarpone cheese, and topped with strawberries and mango. The cheese was really the star of this morsel, making it almost like a cheesecake with fruit.
The apple French toast was dessert for breakfast. Fresh Granny Smith apples fried in rich butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon, this was like a slice of apple pie at breakfast.
My favorite was the strawberries and cream. The fresh homemade whipped cream paired so well with the fresh strawberries, and gave it a balanced, light flavor.
If you get any of the egg dishes, upgrade your potatoes! The upgraded potatoes are served with truffle oil, arugula, and parmesan cheese. Such a rich and delicious addition to the perfectly fried potatoes.
The shrimp frittata is an open-faced omelet that was honestly one of the best I've ever eaten. Fresh eggs baked with shrimp, corn, Anaheim chiles, chipotle cream sauce, and all of the delicious mozzarella cheese combine to make this a seriously delicious plate of eggs. If you enjoy shrimp, I suggest you try it.
Fig Tree is famous for their Benedicts, and I needed to try another one. Instead of the standard Canadian bacon, this Benedict has Angus beef shortribs, perfectly braised, generous avocado slices, and tomato served atop the house focaccia bread. The flavors worked perfectly together, and was such a good savory breakfast.
One more picture of the beautiful French toasts! Fig Tree is bound to be successful in the Gaslamp, so definitely check it out and go hungry. Fig Tree Cafe is open daily 7 am - 3 pm. They serve mostly breakfast, but also have a selection of sandwiches, soups, and salads.
