It's a time for celebration and excesses, but it's also the season for giving back. There are so many ways that we can give back in small and large ways, and I have a collection of events going on this month to give back.
St. Paul’s PACE, whose programs care for San Diego’s most frail and low-income seniors, is hosting their annual Sundries for Seniors drive through Dec. 18.
Each year, the drive is meant to encourage San Diegans to donate sundry items or small gifts. This year, the program has more than 700 seniors and the goal is to give each senior a special care package at Christmas.
There are two drop off locations – 8a.m. to 4:30p.m., Monday through Friday at St. Paul’s PACE Day Centers. Items include tems of need include: (all must be new and not wrapped)
Carols by Candlelight — Dec. 8 & 9

Carols by Candlelight — Dec. 8 & 9
A spectacular family holiday concert, Carols by Candlelight, will take place Dec. 8 & 9 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Now in its 28th year, proceeds from this holiday country concert will go to Rady Children’s Hospital.
In partnership with Blue Star Families, The Super Dentists have adopted 15 military families for the holidays. The 15 military families will receive holiday wish list items as an early Christmas at the Winter Wonderland on Dec. 9. All military families get a priority – front of the line pass – at the Free Dental Day as well.
Toys for Joy — Dec. 9
On Saturday, December 9, 25,000 people are expected to attend the 21st annual Toys for Joy event from 9AM-2PM. Now, the event is expanded to four locations, including Lincoln High School, El Cajon Valley High School, Southwest High School, and Vista High School.
Twenty years in the running, families start lining up as early as 4pm the day before for an opportunity to receive toys, clothing and groceries for the holidays. Now more than ever, Toys for Joy has become a tradition that San Diego families count on every December, meeting the needs of thousands. Last year alone, Toys for Joy gave away over 25,000 toys, 15,100 bags of groceries, 312,500 articles of clothing and shoes to brighten the lives of many San Diego kids. This event is free and open to the community.
The concert, beginning at 8:00 p.m., will feature country music stars singing their hits and favorite holiday songs. Headliners include: Lonestar – CMA & ACM award winners with 10 No. 1 hits, selling over 10 million albums – plus Brandy Clark, CMA Award winner and four-time Grammy nominee, as well as up-and-comers Charlie Worsham, Anna Vaus and concert founder Steve Vaus (2010 Grammy winner).
Following the on-stage performances, to close the evening, the audience and stars meet in the courtyard and sing Silent Night by Candlelight. In addition to the live entertainment, the benefit also features a live auction offering guitars autographed by James Taylor and Brad Paisley, as well as silent auctions and raffle prizes, donated by sponsoring organizations. Super Dentists’ Free Dental Day & Winter Wonderland — Dec. 9
San Diego’s largest pediatric dentistry and orthodontic office – The Super Dentists – will be holding a grand opening for their newest and fifth location in Kearny Mesa at 9737 Aero Drive, on Saturday, Dec. 9. The all-day event will have two celebrations – Free Dental Day, from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. and a Winter Wonderland event, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The Super Dentists will be hosting free dental treatments to the first 100 kids, ages 1-12 years. No insurance or questions will be asked. Treatments include cleanings, extractions and fillings. Children in pain will be seen with priority.
