Sugar, spice and everything nice? Hmm. How ‘bout just
passing the sugary stuff please. Since June is National Candy Month, it seems
appropriate to satisfy our collective sweet tooth with a new twist on this
candy holiday by putting together some of San Diego’s best candied concoctions
that are sure to leave your taste buds in a frenzy.
Down in the Gaslamp District, barleymash has
gotten really in touch with their sweet side. Grab a Maple Bacon S’More Bar that is made with fluffy homemade toasted marshmallow piled on top of a
bacon-graham cracker crust and topped with candied bacon and a maple drizzle, or
get the Red Hot Skillet Brownie that
is served with a rich, warm chocolate brownie soaked in a cinnamon whiskey
caramel, complete with vanilla ice cream and homemade red hot candies.
With the Fig Tree Café whipping out the best brunch
in San Diego, you know their Man Candy
has got to be pretty great. No ladies, we’re not talking about the men serving
up your food, instead it is their thick cut bacon, candied with brown sugar and
paprika, that has us drooling. It is the perfect sweet pick-me-up during or
after brunch. For those in need of a candied caffeine fix, Fig Tree Café also
offers a Toasted Marshmallow or Caramel
Coffee for your sipping pleasure.
Looking for something a little more adventurous? The Duck Dive
has created the Candied Ginger Noir
with Grey Goose cherry noir, Domaine
De Canton French ginger liqueur, lime, simple syrup, ruby red grapefruit and a candied
ginger garnish. Though sweet, this drink is devilishly delicious.

Right off Pacific Coast Highway in Encinitas, Union Kitchen & Tap
has gotten crafty with their salads. A favorite is the Roasted Beet Salad with fennel, mint, Maytag blue cheese, maple
vinaigrette and pecan brittle for that perfect hint of sweetness.
It is no surprise that Café Lulu has some pretty sweet hookah blends that can tastefully satisfy
any shisha lover. At the top of the list for National Candy Month is the Peppermint Patty Hookah with a unique flavor
of delicious chocolate mint. Craving a candied desert instead? Café Lulu also
serves up some sinful sweets like the Reese’s
Peanut Butter Cheesecake to fill your chocolate and peanut butter needs.
