Project Bar & Grill

I miss living in Hillcrest. Don't get me wrong, I love Normal Heights and have no desire to leave it, but I really miss Hillcrest and its festivals, easy access to Balboa Park, and the many restaurants in the neighborhood.

Project Bar & Grill is a unique beer-focused restaurant and bar that serves local and independent beers along with a chef-driven menu. Located in the former R Gang building, Brew Project has taken the space and made it quite the comfy hangout. The private event area is just like having a party in your living room, without having to clean up!

We were invited to try out the brunch (served on weekends from 10 AM to 3 PM), which features a variety of breakfast and lunch favorites on offer.  We chose some classics -- chicken and waffles and chilaquiles verde. The chicken and waffles was nicely presented so that it was easy to get a good distribution of fried chicken and waffles in every bite.

Chilaquiles verde is one of my favorite brunch treats. I never make it at home -- I just never seem to get the sauce/eggs/tortilla combination right. The sauce was tangy, with loads of lime flavor.

The CBD lemonades are a new addition to the menu, and a great one for a hot summer day. These were so refreshing, it was hard to remember that they contain alcohol (and CBD!). A new kind of cocktail, these are known to relieve anxiety and tension, served from a tap. Three flavors are offered: a vodka lemonade, a tropical fruit lemonade, and a mint lemonade. Both that I tried were delicious and refreshing. I would definitely try these again to get the benefits of CBD and have a nice beverage.

I really loved the new layout of the bar, with a deck and a relaxed atmosphere. The beer is reasonable, and there are several special events throughout the week to keep patrons returning. The extensive menu of beers was interesting, but the lemonades were really the star of this visit.
