Nostalgic Drinks

Forget about “Throwback Thursdays”, throwing back “thirsty” is all the rage lately. With the popularity of shows like “Mad Men” and movies such as “The Great Gatsby” sending the masses into flashback frenzy, old-fashioned cocktails are experiencing a restaurant renaissance in San Diego. Poof your pompadour, pull up those bobby socks and head to one of these San Diego joints for their take on the classic concoctions.
Salt & Cleaver
Boasting a now and then-style cocktail menu, Hillcrest’s Salt and Cleaver is serving up classic and contemporary versions of vintage cocktails. Try the California Collins, a take on the original “Tom Collins.” This modernized version kicks it up a notch with locally distilled Ballast Point Gin, lemon and grapefruit juices, lemongrass infused simple syrup and soda.

The Duck Dive
There Will Be Blood (well, blood oranges that is) at Pacific Beach’s The Duck Dive this summer. Channeling Don Draper’s favorite, the “Old-Fashioned,” this Mad Men-esque cocktail combines Buffalo Trace Bourbon, fresh blood orange, bitters, maraschino cherry, brown sugar and ginger ale.
True North Tavern
Saddle up and mosey on over to North Park’s True North Tavern for the Strawberry Bourbon Mule. This southern cousin to the “Moscow Mule” takes advantage of peak strawberry season, combining Benchmark Bourbon, strawberry puree, lemon juice and topping it off with the essential dose of ginger beer.

Union Kitchen and Tap
Always one to play by their own rules, Union Kitchen and Tap in Encinitas adds a little south-of-the-border flair to one classic cocktail. The Latin Manhattan brings together Don Julio Blanco tequila, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, sweet and dry vermouth, agave nectar, lemon and soda, house made maraschino cherry and syrup to create a So-Cal friendly version of this New York original.
Uptown Tavern
The cooler, younger brother to the “Hot Toddy,” the Cold Toddy is making its debut at Uptown Tavern Hillcrest. Apricot and peach tea infused-Old Forester Bourbon mingles with agave nectar and fresh lemon juice to create a warm-weather version of this traditional winter beverage.
The Air Conditioned Lounge
Settle into the vintage atmosphere of the The Air Conditioned Lounge, where two retro cocktails merged into one. The Mint Julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1938, and the Presbyterian, AKA “the press,” come together in one glass to create the refreshing Mint Julep Press. This ultra refreshing hybrid combines Jim Beam Kentucky Bourbon and lightly muddled fresh mint with equal parts 7-Up and soda water.
