So a couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going to an opening party for the newest addition to the culinary powerhouse of Hillcrest, Uptown Tavern. After sampling some of their treats, I was looking forward to returning for a full meal, which we did this week!
Situated right on University Avenue, Uptown Tavern is quite easy to find amongst the shops and restaurants lining the strip. Their space is very open air, with large windows and outside seating. The decor is very industrial, yet there is an old-fashioned chicness to it that makes it feel vibrant and inviting.
We were seated very quickly, and immediately brought water in this adorable bottle. Of course, we had to have some beer -- it just doesn't seem right to eat at in a pub setting without it.
At our server's suggestion, we started off with some of the brussel sprouts. Sprouts are making a huge splash into the culinary world, served up with all sorts of trimmings, and Uptown certainly knows how to dress up this vegetable. Balsamic vinegar, top quality olive oil, romano cheese, and of course, bacon! These brussel sprouts didn't know what hit them! They were amazingly good, and served as a huge helping.
Everything on the menu looked good, with a nice selection of comfort foods that would pair wonderfully with the many beers served. After some thinking, I decided that the special mac & cheese with blue cheese and short ribs was the ticket.
All I can say is, wow! The mac & cheese was so creamy, and the beef ribs were so tender and delicious mixed into the pungent cheese sauce.
Like the brussel sprouts, the portion size was huge, which is a good thing, because everyone at your table will want a bite!
The grand finale was the delicious chicken and waffles! Piled high onto a sweet, homemade waffle are seasoned chicken tenders, which are then glazed with maple syrup. If you are a fan of sweet and salty together (you mean there are people who aren't?), then this dish is right up your alley. The chicken was boneless, and seasoned with a traditional salt and pepper breading. The waffles were nice and crisp, and so sweet! We devoured this dish in seconds!
