The Wellington

Have you made your reservations for Restaurant Week? Get to it, it's next week! And just to be helpful, here's the link with the participating restaurants and their menus. As I've stated many times, I am a huge fan of this event! And it's next week!

I was treated to a preview of the Restaurant Week menu at The Wellington, a classic steakhouse in Mission Hills. The space is quite small, but the mirrors everywhere give the illusion of something bigger. It's quaint -- I kind of felt as though I had stepped back in time to a speakeasy from the 30s.

The food was old-time as well (in a wonderful way) -- classic steaks with classic sides, which is actually welcome in this neighborhood. Hillcrest and Mission Hills have enough fusion and nouveau cuisine, let's get some classics up in here!

For Restaurant Week, a 3-course prix fixe is offered, with a choice of three different items per course. We first ordered some of their famous martinis, then ordered our first course. For our first course, we decided to try the braised pork cheeks and crab cakes.

The crab cakes were very, very good! Being from Maryland, my husband takes his crab cakes very seriously, and these got his thumbs up! Slightly spicy and very meaty (no fillers here), these were an appetizer worthy of being a main course.

The pork cheeks were nothing short of amazing. Very flavorful and carefully braised, then wrapped in a puff pastry, this was probably the best pork that I have ever eaten.

Pork cheeks!

Next up was the main course! And what did we order? Steak, of course! I decided to get the New York Strip, which was served with sweet and yukon gold potato gratin, as well as bacon roasted brussel sprouts. My husband chose the filet mignon with the mashed potatoes and broccoli.

Look at that huge steak! (Pictured is me for comparison of how big my steak was). And of course, it was delicious! When is steak not? Seriously, the steaks were both wonderful, nice and tender, and full of beefy flavor. The sides were incredible! The mashed potatoes were very well-seasoned, and the bacon brussel sprouts could not have been healthy at all -- they were too good!
Finally, the lovely desserts! There were two choices for dessert, so we each got something different. I went for the white chocolate creme brulee, and my husband got the peanut butter torte with chocolate sauce (but of course we shared!).  Check out that torte! It was totally rich and decadent, but the perfect end to such a meal. In fact, decadent might be the perfect summation of this meal in general. Everything was perfect and rich. Are you making reservations now?
