Taste of the Himalayas

After over two years of living in San Diego, I finally found a very good place for Indian! For so long, I've missed the tasty, spicy delights that seemed to exist only on the East Coast or in San Fran. No more!

Taste of the Himalayas is located in a tiny strip mall in Point Loma, just off of Sports Arena Blvd. Not exactly the spot where I would expect to find great food. However, much like some of my previous reviews, the location of the restaurant is deceiving. The place is perfectly clean, although tiny and unassuming.

We ordered their lunch special, priced embarrassingly low (6.95 for two dishes, rice, soup, and naan!), picking the chicken vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. For my meal, I had to get the palak paneer, my all-time favorite Indian dish. Comfort food I say! So creamy and spicy; it's my go-to food when I have a cold. Those spices will blast the cold right out!

TOH specializes in spicy, and the range is 1-10. We both ordered a 5, and the spice was perfect! The lentil soup was quite tasty, and was a nice treat to take the edge off our hunger. Not at all spicy, this soup was just thick and slightly garlicky. Our main courses came out quickly, and I was not disappointed in the spice! Flavorful and aromatic, the palak paneer was perfection, with just enough creamy goodness to give it an edge.

The chicken dishes were sublime. The tikka masala was quite tasty, with just a bit of spice, but the vindaloo -- oh mama! So wonderfully hot, just as vindaloo should be! The freshly baked naan was the perfect foil and helped cut the spice somewhat.

The food was so wonderful that I overate a bit, and that's a rare thing for me. I can't wait to go back! Highly recommended!
