Farmhouse Cafe

It’s no secret to any of my regular readers that I am a huge fan of French cuisine. In fact, over the past six months, I’ve probably eaten more French food than any other type. Surprisingly, I had never tried Farmhouse Café until recently, when a friend suggested going there for brunch. In an out-of-the-way location on Adams Avenue, I had just never gotten around to gooing there. I was excited, because I’ve heard wonderful things about it, but worried that it would be rushed, as I’ve heard that their brunch can get quite crowded.

We arrived at 10 on a Sunday, expecting a line, but were instead greeted by a perfectly airy, half-full restaurant. We were all starving, so we got down to the business of choosing our food right away. However, the décor is lovely and quaint, with small tables placed closely together, very much like the restaurants that I visited in Paris.

The specials were presented in detail, and when a special sounds good, I say go for it (unless of course, you are in Italy, according to my friend Heatherjean). The special omelet was a pork belly and egg concoction with seasonings and green onions, which two of my companions ordered. I decided that I couldn’t miss the ricotta pancakes.

As we dug into our meals, I knew that I had chosen wisely. The pancakes were about small and thick, and very moist because of the ricotta cheese. They were served smothered in a mandarin orange syrup, with one orange slice on the side. I would have preferred a little more fruit, but the pancakes were delightful.

The omelet, however, was out of this world! The pork was well-seasoned and tender, and the eggs were cooked just right. A few green onions provided a nice crunch with the softness of the eggs and meat. Served with a side of baguette toast, it was a perfect breakfast!
