So, I'm not much of a drinker. Sure, I like wine, love it in fact. However, I don't partake in drinking a lot of it, and if I drink it, it has to be good. That's not to say that I don't hit up the Trader Joe's wine department. I do quite frequently. However, I buy them with the caveat that I might wind up throwing away the entire bottle after one sip. :) With liquor, however, it's another story. I very rarely drink liquor, and when I do, it must be top notch.
I had written in a previous review about how impressed I was by the cocktails at AIRR Supper Club. I'm a fan of highbrow cocktails, with well thought out ingredients that are much more than just throwing a shot of vodka and filling the rest of the glass with orange juice.
Luckily, there are two places in San Diego that specialize in handcrafted cocktails -- Starlite and El Dorado. Both places have a short, impressive menu of specialty drinks, and bonus! happy hours every day of the week featuring these concoctions.
Both bars are friendly, and despite the care and thought that they put into their drinks, in no way snooty or intimidating. Remember, these are not the kind of drinks with which one "gets wasted." These are, in fact, sippers, to be enjoyed, appreciating the skill and flavors delivered with each sip. For instance, my favorite drink, served at El Dorado, is the Oh! Susannah. A mixture of rye whiskey, lemon juice, honey, and orange rind, this is a drink to be savored, drank slowly and leisurely over good conversation. The flavors are not there to hide the taste of the alcohol, but rather to enhance it.
The Starlite is famous for its mules, serving them in copper mugs, combining for a feeling of rustic and cosmopolitan. The mules should be famous; they're that good. Cold and wonderfully spicy, the ginger beer is the perfect foil for the premium vodka and bitters.
Alcohol is basically bad for you, so it stands to reason that if you're going to do something bad, it should be the best kind of bad, and these places are the best that I've found to indulge.
