San Diego is a city of breakfast. When I ask people about good places to eat, the subject of booze specials usually comes up, followed by a mention of favorite brunch locales. A favorite eatery of locals, tucked into an unassuming corner of Hillcrest, is Hash House a Go Go (usually referred to as simply, Hash House). Hearing about their scrumptious brunch menu (not to mention their huge pancakes), and the fact that it is around the corner from my apartment, we decided that we had to try it.
It was Saturday morning, but we arrived early enough (9:00 AM) to avoid a long wait. There was a line out the door, and we wound up waiting about 20 minutes for a table. In a brilliant move, the restaurant doled out free coffee to the waiting crowd, which kept the grumpies at bay.
Once inside, we were promptly greeted by our waitress, who was very friendly without seeming to be working a tip. She was very patient about explaining some of the specials and answering our questions, which I've found to be rare on the West Coast. We ordered the eggs any style plate, which came with mashed potatoes, biscuits, and bacon, as well as some fruit, and the pancake.
The first thing that I have to state about the food is that the portions were huge! The eggs were cooked perfectly, not rubbery or undercooked, and the serving was enough for three adults. The potatoes were incredible, sturdy, yet soft, and rich in buttery flavor. They easily the best mashed potatoes I've ever had, and a welcome change as a breakfast dish. The bacon was lean and hardy, with a slight sweet taste.
Aside from the delicious mashed potatoes, the pancake was the star of the meal. The pancakes are served in a variety of flavor combinations, but we decided to order the unusual combination of mangoes and coconut. The pancake covered the entire (large) plate, and was quite thick. Again, this portion would easily feed three to four adults. The fruit combined with the sweet pastry made syrup unnecessary, but the pancake was not overly sweet.
Hash House is definitely worth a visit, particularly if you are very hungry! Just be prepared to take home leftovers.
