Extraordinary Desserts

Ever since I moved to San Diego, I've been hearing that Extraordinary Desserts is the place to go for a mind-blowing experience in flour and sugar. Located in an unassuming part of Banker's Hill, this unassuming place would be easily missed unless one was specifically looking for it.

I wondered how much business a dessert-only place would generate, particularly in this out-of-the-way location, but this Wednesday night was quite busy, with a 15-minute wait to order. The offerings change daily, with the menu written on a chalkboard behind the counter. Scoops of homemade ice cream can be added to their selection of pastries, cakes, and cookies for an extra charge.

Don't let the counter service and lack of menus fool you -- the setting is very refined and comfortable, perfect for a date or special occasion. Ordering takes place at the counter, but a server brings the order to your table.

We decided to split the chocolate croissant bread pudding with a scoop of chocolate ice cream and a pot of French press coffee. The dessert was served warm, with the ice cream quickly melting to add another layer of chocolate flavor. It was incredibly decadent with the flavor of the coffee to compliment.

The most noticeable attribute of this dessert as well as many of the others was the size! The servings here are huge! Even sharing, we had a lot leftover. I really don't want to think about the havoc all of the butter and sugar could wreak on one's health. However, Extraordinary Desserts is an indulgence, and not a place one visits daily. Still, a sugar-free or lower calorie option might be a nice option.

The best part of the experience was the delicious coffee. I like coffee, but my husband is a coffee fiend. This coffee made a believer of me. Rich, complex, and balanced, the coffee alone made a return visit worthwhile. Recommended.
