Bareback Grill

Inspired by an episode of How I Met Your Mother, my husband and I have been searching for the best burger in San Diego, and I think that we found it. Bareback Grill does its best to cultivate the New Zealand theme, with meat pies and some Outback-like phrasing, but the star at Bareback is the burgers, served in a sports bar atmosphere featuring mildly offensive bar decor and free shuffleboard with waitresses reminiscent of Hooter Girls.

Bareback Grill has made me a believer of all of that hype about organic meat and fresh bread -- their burger has incredible flavor and texture thanks to these verdant ingredients. The burgers come in a variety of toppings combinations. They are a perfect medley of ingredients, with a nice thick slab of lean beef amidst novel cheeses and some homemade sauces. Fries are an extra three to five bucks, with is a little steep, but are a perfect companion, freshly cut and generously seasoned with sea salt. Considering them an appetizer and not including them with the sandwich is a bit obnoxious, but the order is huge, and could be shared between two people easily.

The lamb burger, an underground star hidden in the back of the menu is superb, with a thick slab or tender ground lamb, bleu cheese, and mint jelly. Extraordinary.

Highly recommended.

Hi there. I agree that Bareback makes an excellent burger. I would also recommend that you try the burger at Jayne's Gastropub. It's a bit expensive (about $15), but it's really something special. If your interested, here's my list of the the best burgers in San Diego.

Happy blogging.
